Multiple reports by Upper Allen Township residents have been made regarding a black bear in the area. On Saturday May 8th between 11:30AM and 11:30PM, a bear was spotted near the Meadowview housing development, the Mechanicsburg Middle School and Gettysburg Pike near East Winding Hill RD. The bear appears to be a young bear of small size based on the description of witnesses. The Game Commission has been working with the Upper Allen Township Police in an attempt to remove the bear from the area. The bear has not proven to be hostile in any way.

The PA Game Commission has provided some guidelines for Township residents who may come into contact with this bear. Do not attempt to “bait” the bear in any way. The bear is most likely searching for a suitable area to claim its territory. Residents living in or near the above mentioned locations should attempt to remove any bird feeders from around their residences. In addition, any garbage or food waste should be secured inside. If the bear is not captured before hand the PA Game Commission plans to have a bear trap set up and functional by Monday, May 10th. If you see the bear call the PA Game Commission dispatch number at (814) 643-1831. If the bear is creating an emergency situation, call 911 for a Police response.
