On April 14th and May 12th the South Central PA Highway Safety sponsored a safe driving competition for youth. The local competition was held on April 14th with Cumberland, Franklin, Dauphin and Perry Counties participating. Every high school in these counties was invited to participate by selecting students who would demonstrate their knowledge and ability in the area of safe driving. The selected students competed individually and as part of a school team in a driving event, a written exam, and perceptual driving test. The finalist from that competition competed in a statewide competition that was held on May 12th.

Officer James Miller from the Upper Allen Township Police Department assisted in this endeavor. This is an annual event that the Upper Allen Township Police Department strives to participate in to enable and encourage our youth to be safe drivers.

The Upper Allen Township Police Department will be partnering with PennDOT and Buckle Up PA in a national “Click It or Ticket” seatbelt enforcement initiative from May 18, through May 31.

The effort will focus largely on nighttime enforcement, between the hours of 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM using traffic enforcement zones and roving patrols. Police will concentrate their efforts on roadways with high numbers of unbuckled crashes. Citations will be issued to motorists who are caught unbuckled or transporting unrestrained children.

According to PennDOT data there were 13,627 unrestrained crashes that resulted in 383 fatalities in 2014.

Motorists are reminded that Pennsylvania’s primary seat-belt law requires drivers and passengers under 18 years old to buckle up, and children under the age of four must be properly restrained in an approved child safety seat. Children ages 4 to 8 must be restrained in an appropriate booster seat. In addition, children ages 8 to 18 must be in a seat belt when riding anywhere in the vehicle.

Also, drivers and front-seat passengers 18 years-old or older are required to buckle up. If motorists are stopped for a traffic violation and are not wearing their seat belt, they can receive a second ticket and second fine.

Funding for this enforcement effort comes from part of PennDOT’s statewide distribution of $1.7 million in federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On May 15 at around 5:20 PM, Jill Wolni was exiting from US Route 15 southbound onto S Market ST. She was not aware the vehicles in front of her had stopped and she crashed into the back of Lytle’s vehicle. Lytle’s vehicle then struck Brossman’s vehicle. A passenger was taken to the hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.

On May 8, 2015 The Upper Allen Township Police were informed that a member at the Planet Fitness gym in Upper Allen Township had their black Apple iPhone 5 (IEMI: 013332001891235) stolen from an unsecured locker at the facility on May 7, 2015 between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM. The Upper Allen Township Police are now investigating. The Upper Allen Police would like to remind the community to ensure that their personal property is secure at all times. A new computer scam has been reported to the Upper Allen Police Department. The scam involves a pop up which appears while using Apple products. In the reported theft the pop ups appeared on an Ipad and an IPhone. The pop up is a white box which uses the Apple logo and appears to be from the company. Once displayed the device is frozen and all other applications are inaccessible. The pop up requests payment in the amount of $30 and provides an 866 number to call with your credit card information. If payment is made the amount goes to an entity which has no affiliation with Apple. Once the payment is made the device is unlocked and returns to normal function.

If you receive a similar type of pop up while using an Apple product do not call the phone number provided. Instead contact Apple directly at 1-800-275-2273.
