Latest Craigslist Scam Targets Upper Allen Residents

July 14, 2011

Upper Allen Police have received numerous reports from residents about a new scam on Craigslist. A scammer takes photographs and descriptions of residences from real estate listings and posts them on Craigslist for rent. These residences have been single family homes, not apartments.

Scenario 1:

The person listing the residence tells the interested renter that he and his family are moving to Africa for missionary work. The missionary’s wife had convinced him not to sell the house in case they wanted to return so they decided to rent the house. The person listing told the interested renter that he could drive by the residence but was not able to give a showing. If an initial security deposit of $700 was wired to the missionary in Africa, then they would supply the interested renter with a key and lease agreement.

Scenario 2:

Similar to Scenario 1, other than the family is going to Africa to work in the petroleum fields.

Upper Allen Police encourage residents to be skeptical. “If its too good to be true, it probably is” would be a good measure of a scam. Additionally, wiring money over seas for property or services should be a red flag for a possible scam. If you have any doubt, please call Police before sending any money.
