Police Advise of Scam Alert

August 3, 2012
UAT20120700970

The Upper Allen Township Police are advising of another scam being perpetrated upon area residents. In a case reported on July 31, 2012, a township resident received a call advising that they had won $2.5 million as a sweepstakes winner. As a condition of payment, the victim was instructed to secure Green Dot MoneyPaks as payment for required background checks and tax payments. The scammers then received the authorization codes for the MoneyPakss from the victim and transferred the money. No prize was being awarded.

Police remind the public that if the offer seems too good to be true, it is likely on of the many scams being perpetrated recently. Anyone receiving such calls is encouraged to fully investigate any such offers before taking any actions. Never give out any bank or personal information to such callers. Many scammers are well versed in these schemes and will commonly have done research on the intended victim and the area. This knowledge is then used as a means of deceiving you into believing that they are legitimate.
